We provided environmental enrichment by offering ripe limes (Citrus sp.; Rutaceae) to a troop of captive spider monkeys at the National Center for Conservation and Recovery of Species/Rosy Walther Zoo, Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The aim of the study was to stimulate biological functions in these nonhuman primates. All individuals interacted with the fruit; however, fur rubbing (sternal and axillary) with the citrus fruit was performed specifically by adult and juvenile males. The function of this behavior may relate to scent marking for olfactory communication, a hypothesis already proposed for the species.
